Year 1

Welcome to Year 1 Palm Tree Class!

Welcome back!

Spring is here and the children have all come back ready to learn. Both myself and Mr Farrant are really pleased with how well the children have settled now Mrs Guerin has left; she had a baby boy the day after leaving school!

This half term we are learning about Great Britain with a special focus on London. We have started our English by reading 'Naughty Bus', and I'm really looking forward to reading the adventure stories the children will be creating based around this story. Our maths learning is measures based, we are planning to do lots of fun measuring whilst learning about length, height, weight and capacity. We will be studying art work by Lowery. Our science learning will be about observing changes looking at seasons and weather.

PE will now be on Mondays and Tuesdays so please remember PE kits and that earring will need to be removed for PE lessons.

Spring A

Our topic this half term will focus around the wonderful story ‘The Gruffalo’.

We will be:

  • Writing our own page that could be added to the story of The Gruffalo, creating an information book about animals which live in the woods and creating our own rhyming poems.
  • Extending our place value knowledge, solving addition and subtraction problems and looking at some new methods to help us solve these problems.
  • Creating patterns using animal footprints, building our own shoebox woodland scene and using different media to create a Gruffalo and baking our own delicious Gruffalo cakes.
  • Developing our learning about coding using PurpleMash and using 2story to retell the story of the Gruffalo.
  • Looking at various religions and some of the rituals they take part in.
  • Labelling the parts of the human body, investigating the five senses, grouping animals and using the words carnivore, herbivore and omnivore to describe what animals eat.

Exploring where animals live and comparing animal’s habitats from hot and cold countries.
